We are the Northern Cross Science Foundation, a non-profit organization all about astronomy and related sciences. We are so glad that you are enjoying our astronomy-related interpretive signs at Harrington Beach State Park; be sure to walk all the way around the outside of our observatory building so you can read them all. By the way, there’s a big telescope inside that building and the roof slides away to expose it to the sky:
On various nights throughout the year, we open our observatory to the public, where anyone can look at the mountains and craters on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, polar ice caps on Mars, ancient clusters of 100,000 stars, stellar nurseries, the ghost-like outer layers of dying stars, and even other galaxies outside of our own. With a little bit of training, NCSF members can use equipment in the observatory on their own.
